About Jenn Mason—artist statement
I create because I must. The constant influences of the world around me fuel my curiosities, continuously feeding me new ideas and diversions to explore. My need to translate these ideas onto a canvas or into a three-dimensional assemblage is inescapable.
I choose to create stories with paint, paper and found objects from the past. As I begin each piece I initiate a conversation with the viewer. I am always on the hunt for the perfect object for my next story—the next dialog. Small bits of text, numbers or photos help me to add hidden messages or secrets making each piece slightly irreverent.
My current works are a continuing exploration in color and its application. By working in a series I am able to make more discoveries and take more chances. I faithfully try to add new techniques and material applications to expand my knowledge of fiber and textiles, color theory and typography as part of my ongoing experimentation with my art.
